Back in 2014, founder and head chef Alexandra Turnham tragically lost her beloved mother Jane. Inspired by the passion for cooking instilled in her by her mother, Alex decided to quit her job in marketing and enter Michael Caines MBE South West Chef of the Year - Best Dish competition (open to all aspiring home cooks). To her surprise and delight, Alex won the 2014 award and without any formal training went on to become head chef of a thriving seaside bistro in Beer, East Devon.
Fast forward to 2015 and mother nature blessed Alex and husband Stuart with the conception of child no.2, but 7 months into the pregnancy Stuart was diagnosed with an aggressive form of blood cancer. Alex dropped everything, left the bistro, gave birth to newborn James, supported their daughter Lara and nursed Stuart throughout his gruelling treatment.
Thankfully, 2 years on and with Stuart in remission, cancer free, the couple had learned that life is for living and with it the vision of creating a fun, family fuelled, social dining enterprise was born. A business inspired from the love of pizza, made with the finest local produce, simply cooked and sustainably delivered, from their family home, nestled in the idyllic Blackdown Hills, Devon.
After extensive building works, Blackdown Pizza Co came to fruition! Alex and Stuart transformed their traditional Devon Farmhouse, creating a large, tech savvy, indoor/outdoor kitchen and dining area, complimented by the star of the business, a uniquely converted mobile shipping container, inclusive traditional wood fired ovens.
For now we offer pizza takeaway and delivery, wedding and event catering, as well as unique wood fired private dining experiences, but with chapters of our story yet to be written much, much more will be coming soon!
